Any movie involving frat boys runs the risk of being in Animal House's drunken shadow, as was the case in Nicholas Stoller's Neighbors.
New parents Mac (Seth Rogen, This is the End) and Kelly Radner (Rose Byrne, Bridesmaids) lead a standard suburban life until their next door neighbors arrive. Upon move-in day, the awkward couple requests that these frat boys keep it down before anything warrants that demand. Little do Mac and Kelly know that they'll soon cave into elicit behavior and shenanigans, compromising their once sweet nature while making for goofy scenes.
Although the movie was less funny than anticipated, take note of one quirky scene that's been done before. While dildo fighting with dreamy frat President Teddy Sanders (Zac Efron, High School Musical), Mac tastes something unusual. Sorority Boys (2002) did the whole dildos in lieu of swords gig before. It still makes for effective slapstick but tastes kind of stale. Now on-command boners and milking humans - that's grossly novel.
"I just milked a human!" Exclaimed Mac after helping relieve someone's mammary glands.
Platonic and sexual chemistry among characters hardly existed. Affectionate Radner scenes were painful to watch, especially when everyone in the movie also observes. Absolving some awkwardness, Seth Rogen's character drops hilarious one-liners like his respective characters in 40-Year-Old Virgin and This is the End.
"What you got there, sweetie? Is that a ballon?" Mac asks his infant daughter. "That's not a balloon [it's a condom]! Oh Jesus!" The couple then seeks immediate medical treatment for their daughter as she could have naturally contracted something from merely playing with that filthy latex. It's all a bit too ridiculous, however worth seeing for a few good laughs and Zac Efron's pretty person. - LIZ KOBAK
