On the Street

Quirky New Year's Eve in Miami

In the spirit of New Year's Eve and getting weirdness out before the dawn of 2015, a few strange things happened while vacationing in Miami. And they feel straight up out of a Judd Apatow movie, or future one.

While sitting outside at a local restaurant on a beautiful New Year's Eve day, I noticed how no one was out and about, contrary to what one might think Miami's social scene looks like in winter. Then all of a sudden, a nun glides outside of the bar, looking angelic in her baby-blue garb and carrying calendars. I had to do a double-take. Out of all of the characters in Miami, could it be that a nun just emerged from the pub rather than, say, a tourist wearing a "I'm in Miami b*tch" tank top? My eyes saw correctly. Through the grapevine, I heard the nun had delivered bartenders religious calendars and good faith. But that was just the start of an interesting evening.

What seemed like moments later, an older woman was trudging down the street alone when she came across a huge frond blocking her path. Infuriated, she then grabbed the plant and chucked it with all of her might across the sidewalk, which nearly thumped an innocent car. After successfully clearing her walkway, she expressed her frustration regarding the sidewalk's cleanliness. "I pay top tax dollars to keep these streets clean. What is this?" the woman exclaimed.

These occurences seemed out of the ordinary, but who really knows. When streets are crowded and noise levels are through the roof, its maybe harder to pick up on the little things and write about them. Needless to say, again, this could very well have transpired in a quirky comedy. And it actually happened in real life, which makes it all the more intriguing.
