Robin Williams' 6 Best Movies

The acting world lost one of its most hilarious entertainers yesterday. Although Robin Williams has departed this world, the unforgettable characters he portrays in movies immortalizes him. Here are Cine & Heard's favorite six:

1. Movie: The Dead Poets Society (1989)

What makes it funny and great: As a strong-minded poetry teacher and mentor, John Keating advises his private school students on how to appreciate the craft and life in general.

Best Quote: "We don't read and write poetry because it's cute," says Keating to his students. "We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race."

2. Movie: Hook (1991)

What makes it funny and great: Seeing Robin Williams transform from egocentric businessman dad to kind-hearted, green-wearing and hair-flaring Peter Pan cracks a smile onto anyone's face.

Best Quote: "To die would be a great adventure!" exclaims Peter Pan (Williams) in response to Captain Hook's (Dustin Hoffman) threat.

3. Movie: The Fisher King (1991)

What makes it funny and great: Earning an Oscar nomination as deranged homeless man Parry, Williams' character rescues radio host Jack Lucas (Jeff Bridges) from suicide after his show induced someone to murder innocent people at a Manhattan bar. Parry convinces viewers of his kind yet outlandish nature; the portrayal also supports Williams' acting versatility and his ability to transform vastly different identities in less than one year.

Best Quote: "There's three things in this world that you need: Respect for all kinds of life, a nice bowel movement on a regular basis, and a navy blazer," Parry said.

4. Movie: Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

What makes it funny and great: Dressing up as a female nanny is an excellent running joke. Plus, he (or shall we say, she?) can spend more time with his biological children whom his wife has custody of since their separation.

Best Quote: "My first day as a woman and I am already having hot flashes," says the newly made-up nanny.

5. Movie: The Birdcage (1996)

What makes it funny and great: Playing a straight turned gay father who operates drag queen shows along Miami Beach, Williams convincingly dances around with ample amounts of chains and exposed chest hairs. Mrs. Doubtfire was just a warm-up.

Best Quote: "Yes, I wear foundation. Yes, I live with a man. Yes, I'm a middle- aged fag. But I know who I am, Val. It took me twenty years to get here, and I'm not gonna let some idiot senator [played by Gene Hackman] destroy that."

6. Movie: Good Will Hunting (1997)

What makes it funny and great: The Chicago native usually plays comedic roles, yet he somehow masters this one, establishing his acting versatility and earning his first Academy Award win in the Best Supporting Actor category.

Best Quote: "You don't know about real loss, 'cause it only occurs when you've loved something more than you love yourself," says Sean Maguire to genius Will when reflecting on losing his beloved wife Nancy. "And I doubt you've ever dared to love anybody that much."
